Best places to visit in October

October is the traveler's month. Summer crowds have gone home, the light softens, and half the world is either turning gold or bringing in the harvest. These are the nine trips we plan most in autumn, with where to go, what changes about them this month, and one thing worth booking now.

Why October

The shoulder season the pros travel in

Airfare drops, hotels reopen their best rooms, and the places that felt impossible in August become the versions of themselves worth flying for. Autumn light does most of the work. The rest is knowing which harvest, which festival, and which mountain to be on the week you're there. Below, our nine picks, and what specifically changes about them in October.

The list

Nine routes for autumn

Route
MUC
Germany

Bavarian Alps · the last golden light

Larches turn buttery yellow against blue-black spruce, alpine huts fire their last stoves before winter, and the beer gardens in Munich sit out one more warm week.

Do this

Ride the Zugspitze cable car at first light, then walk the Partnach Gorge before lunch at a Garmisch alm.

Route
LIS
Portugal

Lisbon · warm days, cool tiles

Atlantic summer lingers into October, with 22°C afternoons, empty Alfama miradouros, and the year's best surf on the Cascais coast.

Do this

Ferry to Cacilhas for grilled sardines, catch fado in a Mouraria taverna, day-trip to Sintra midweek.

Route
TRN
Italy

Piedmont · harvest & white truffle

The Alba white truffle fair opens in early October, Barolo vineyards go rust-red, and every trattoria puts tajarin al tartufo on the chalkboard.

Do this

Book a truffle hunt at dawn, lunch at a Langhe agriturismo, taste Nebbiolo straight from the barrel.

Route
KYO
Japan

Kyoto · before the crowds arrive

The last warm weeks before koyo (autumn foliage) peaks in mid-November. Temples are quiet, cedar forests smell of rain, and the kaiseki menus turn to matsutake and chestnut.

Do this

Walk the Philosopher's Path at dawn, visit Ohara's thatched Sanzen-in, dinner at a Gion counter.

Route
MRK
Morocco

Marrakech · desert weather softens

The summer heat breaks by early October, riads reopen their plunge pools, and the Sahara becomes bearable for a two-night dune excursion.

Do this

Read our full Marrakech food guide. Start with a tagine, end on a rooftop with mint tea.

Route
REY
Ring Road

Iceland · aurora season opens

The nights get long enough for northern lights, the Ring Road empties out, and hot springs feel medicinal in the cooling air.

Do this

Drive south to Vík, soak in the Secret Lagoon after dark, chase clear-sky forecasts north to Akureyri.

Route
OAX
Mexico

Oaxaca · day of the dead

Late October slides into Día de Muertos: cempasúchil flowers, candlelit cemeteries, mezcalerías pouring the year's new batches, and a food scene at its peak.

Do this

Stay through November 1–2, take a mole cooking class in Etla, mezcal tasting in Santiago Matatlán.

Route
CPT
South Africa

Cape Town · spring in the cape

October is Cape spring: Namaqualand wildflowers, whale season on the False Bay coast, and jasmine over every Bo-Kaap wall.

Do this

Drive Chapman's Peak at sunset, whale-watch from Hermanus, taste Chenin Blanc in Franschhoek.

Route
EDI
Scotland

Scottish Highlands · peat smoke season

Heather browns to copper, stalking season fills the glens, and distillery visits get roaring fires and small groups instead of summer coach tours.

Do this

Base in Speyside, walk the Cairngorms in daylight, warm up over Balvenie at night.

Planning notes

A few things worth knowing

  • Book Piedmont and Oaxaca early. Truffle season and Día de Muertos both fill the good hotels months out.
  • Pack for two seasons. Mornings in the Alps and Highlands are near-freezing; midday in Lisbon or Marrakech is short sleeves.
  • Watch the light, not the temperature. October's low sun angle is why photographers travel this month. Golden hour starts by 4pm, so plan the day around it.
  • Aurora needs patience. Iceland's first geomagnetic weeks are unpredictable. Give it three clear nights.
